The Temperance Movement happened during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to limit alcohol consumption in the United States. This movement started in the Protestant church. As the main goal of this movement is to reduce the consumption of alcohol, and how it has harmed the family and children, so many women are joined as volunteers. The movement had the biggest women participation in American history up to that point.

During the 1800s, the industrialization revolution also happened in the US, many people moving from the countryside to the urban area where the factory mostly built. Resulted the city grew faster than ever before, and change the social life in the US. At first, the temperance goal was to reduce alcohol consumption but later it also to prohibit alcohol beverages' sales.

 

The women continued their participation and leadership with the founding of The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)  in November 1874 in Ohio. The WCTU became one of the largest and most influential women’s groups of the 19th century.
