Students in a world geography class want to determine the distances between cities in Europe. The map gives all distances in kil

ometers. The students want to determine the number of miles between towns so they can compare distances with a unit of measure with which they are already familiar. The graph below shows the relationship between a given number of kilometers and the corresponding number of miles.

The tree in your friend's yard casts a shadow that is 27 feet long. Your friend is 5 feet tall and casts a shadow that is 4.5 fe
Wittaler [7]
Set the equation up as a proportion, where x = the height of the tree in feet
27/x = 4.5/5
cross multiply
(4.5)(x) = (27)(5)
(4.5)(x) = 135
divide the entire equation by 4.5 to isolate x
135/4.5 = 30
x = 30
the tree is 30 ft tall

Pythagoras thereom ? help
Nutka1998 [239]

It looks like you have to do distance formula. It's basically this:

D = \sqrt{(y_{2}-y{1})^{2} + (x_{2}-x{1})^{2}   } (ignore the A, i dont know how to get rid of it sorry)

I would then plug in the points of A(1,7) and B(10,3).

D = \sqrt{(7-3)^2 + (10-1)^2  }

Then I would get the square root of 4^2 + 9^2

= square root of 16 + 81

= square root of 97

So the length of AB would be the square root of 97
