How would America have been different if we didn't purchase the Louisiana territory from France?

If America did not purchace the Louisiana territory, we may still had a United States, but would be separated in the middle due to france owning the land. This would have likely been an inconvinience as it would be a territory with different law, government, and people. It would also be harder to travel across the country.
