Gatsby, however, sincerely believes that he can recapture the past, which is seen in his conversation with Nick, his neighbor and the narrator of the story:

Gatsby does not change his opinion, until the end of his life. As Nick describes it, Gatsby has <em>"an extraordinary gift for hope."</em>
