It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.

Miguel de Unamuno was a Spanish philosopher, writer and politician. He cultivated different literary genres, was one of the main authors of the Generation of '98 and invented a new genre, the nivola. He served as rector of the University of Salamanca for two periods: from 1900 to 1924 and 1930 to 1936, during a time of great social and political upheaval.
