The man is accompanied by a dog and, since the narrator reveals the thoughts of the animal, readers can see the dog is actually wiser. The dog knows when they should stop and make fire. He also knows that, if the man fails to save the both of them, he (the dog) must dig a hole in the snow to survive. Finally, the third theme is that wisdom can be gained by listening to those who are more experienced. The main character was advised by an old man in Sulphur Creek to not go out without a companion. His arrogance prevented him from listening but, while suffering, he remembers those words and realizes their value.
