Progressives called for the intervention of various elements in society to assist the working poor and this was in line with A. Social Gospel

Social Gospel:

  • Was a movement amongst Christians that believed social problems should be targeted
  • Aimed to fight economic inequality, poverty and racism
  • Came against alcoholism and child labor

Progressives were mostly Protestant Christians and in the area of Social Justice, they found it unfair that some people were so rich yet there were many poor. They called for assistance for these poor so that they would survive better.

In conclusion, the Progressive call for social and economic assistance for the poor was synonymous with social gospel.
