Would extra mass in the crucible cause the "mass of oxygen" to come out too high or too low? Explain.

Chemistry

 Assuming that the experiment started with the magnesium and did not combine with oxygen, this extra mass would actually decrease the amount of oxygen. This is because it only artificially increases the original mass. Therefore this actually increases the error.

Answer:

<span>too low</span>

How many molecules does 88 grams CO2 contain? A) 1.2 X 1024 B) 1.8 X 1024 C) 3.0 X 1023 D) 6.0 X 1023
mylen [45]

Hey there!:

Molar mass CO2 = 44.01 g/mol

44.01 g CO2 ------------------- 6.02*10²² molecules CO2

88 g CO2 ------------------------ y

y = 88 * ( 6.02*10²² ) / 44.01

y = 5.29*10²⁵ / 44.01

y = 1.2 * 10²⁴ molecules of CO2

Answer A

Hope that helps!

Write the balanced equation for the combustion of isooctane to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide gas.Assuming gasoline is i
tangare [24]

Answer:

The yield is 16 moles of CO2 per 2 moles of isooctane.

The mass of CO2 is 1.15 billion tonnes

Explanation:

First we set the unbalanced equation:

C_{8}H_{18} + O_{2} \longrightarrow CO_{2} + H_{2}O

Now we proceed to balance the equation:

2C_{8}H_{18} + 25O_{2} \longrightarrow 16CO_{2} + 18H_{2}O

With the equation balanced, we see that the theoretical yield is 16 moles of CO2 per 2 moles of isooctane and we can proceed to make calculations with the following data:

\rho _{C_{8}H_{18}}=0.69 g/mL\\Consumption: 142.86x10^{9} gal\\1gal=3785.41 mL\\M_{C_{8}H_{18}}=114.23g/mole\\M_{CO_{2}}=44.01g/mole\\

Knowing the different relations between mass, density and molar mass, we have the following results:

V_{C_{8}H_{18}}=5.41x10^{14}mL\\m_{C_{8}H_{18}}=3.73x10^{14}g\\n_{C_{8}H_{18}}=3.27x10^{12}mole\\n_{CO_{2}}=2.62x10^{13}mole\\m_{CO_{2}}=1.15x1015g\\m_{CO_{2}}=1.15x10^{9}tonnes

What is an ion and how is it formed?
grin007 [14]

Answer: Ions are an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. They are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons in order to fulfill the octet rule and have full outer valence electron shells.

Explanation:

When they lose electrons, they become positively charged and are named cations. When they gain electrons, they are negatively charged and are named anions.
