Answer:

Douglass recalls that he spent his hardest times as a slave during his first six months rented to Covey. Douglass becomes deadened by work, exhaustion, and Covey’s repeated punishments. Douglass loses his spirit, his intellect, his desire to learn, and his natural cheerfulness. Sunday is the slaves’ only leisure time, and Douglass usually spends the day in a stupor in the shade. He considers killing himself, or even Covey, but he is paralyzed by both hope and fear.

Covey’s house is situated near the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, where large ships with white sails travel past. To Douglass, these ships symbolize freedom, cruelly reminding him of his own enslaved condition. Douglass recalls standing on the bank and speaking aloud to the ships, asking them why they should be free and he enslaved. He begs for God’s deliverance and then wonders if there actually is a God. He vows to run away.

lilavasa [31]

Varvara68 [4.7K]
It's 1787 and there are many people coming up to this picnic, I'm deeply quiet because I am one of very few people who know this secret.... I have heard we are having this picnic to support the new government today! Which to me is bright and harmful to hear. But I shall not spill this huge secret to anyone but myself. So, I sit here in this wooden chair feasting with a bunch of neighbors. Daring not to spill one of the most important secrets ever!

umka2103 [35]

He encouraged a widespread fear of Communism.

McCarthyism effectively pushed for an anti-communist rethoric that often accused people of being "soviet spies" without any proof. These people were subject to discrimination (in the form of being kicked out of your job because someone shouted "he's a commie!" in public) and unfair trials thanks to McCarthy himself and the Red Scare, which coincided with each other.
