En Grecia y Roma, la natación era parte del entrenamiento marcial y, con el alfabeto, también formaba parte de la educación primaria para los hombres.

Los romanos construyeron piscinas, distintas de sus baños. Se dice que en el siglo I a. C. el romano Cayo Mecenas construyó la primera piscina climatizada.

El primer campeonato de natación fue una carrera de 400 metros (440 yardas), que se celebró en Australia en 1846 y, posteriormente, anualmente. Los Clubes de Natación Metropolitanos de Londres, fundados en 1869, finalmente se convirtieron en la Asociación de Natación Amateur, el organismo rector de la natación amateur británica. Las federaciones nacionales de natación se formaron en varios países europeos desde 1882 hasta 1889. En los Estados Unidos, la natación fue organizada por primera vez a nivel nacional como deporte por la Unión Atlética Amateur (AAU) en su fundación en 1888. La Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) fue fundada en 1909.
