I would strongly suggest indaba. It allows each country to be heard and they can come to a conclusion quickly. They can only voice their opinion in a certain way. A country gives their Red Line in a diplomatic way and the other can respond with their hard limits.
If you're referring to new non-European states that have risen since the Cold War Ended, then the effect has perhaps been minimal in terms of their daily lives, but if they have close relations with the US it would mean a stronger connection.
If Otto Esche’s idea to use Bactrian Camels to transport salt would have worked out, there would have been a mad rush to the British Columbia, Canada area. The economy for the province would have more than likely boomed, creating a wealthy area. Salt was a very expensive, yet useful commodity as it was used to preserve meats and cure leather. This made it invaluable during this time period. It could also help to sustain soldiers during war (circa Civil War).
