From approximately 1848 to 1855, Cholera was a common disease that killed a number of people. It began in New Orleans and spread quickly along the Mississippi River. There were even cases of it in Spain and Cuba, in which it killed almost 6,000 people. (I also believe this was an epidemic of sorts, because there were some pretty severe cases in other parts of the world too).
