A rhetorical shift or contrasting idea is used when a speaker deviates from the tone of his text. In the last two paragraphs of Gandhi's text, I noticed a rhetorical shift because;

  • After criticizing the policies of the British government in the other paragraphs, he ended by saying that his aim was not to cause unnecessary embarrassment to them.
  • The effect of these contrasts and contradictions on the text is that it infuses an ironic tone to the text.

In his letter, the Indian Activist Mahatma Gandhi called out the British government that was oppressing the Indians.

He criticized the excessive taxation and mean laws they made in India because they took away the rights of the people.

In the end, he said that he did not want to embarrass or threaten the British government.

This seemed contradictory because he criticized their action. Then, it impacts an ironic tone to the text.

According to thomas jefferson what is the basis for human rights?
arsen [322]
The basis for human rights are the laws of nature and god. These human rights (to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) are inalienable and indisputable. They are of nature and god because they weren't given us by one government or another, or by some other human agreement. They naturally belong to every human being, from the moment when they were born.
