Kingsolver is clearly bothered by the situation. Most likely annoyed, even. Using old clothes that were once fashionable did make it any better after 3 years have already passed, since fashion changes and the idea of what is fashionable changes drastically year by year. She was standing out in a way that she clearly disliked:  <em>"My black lace-up oxfords, which my parents perceived to have orthopedic value, carried their own weight in the spectacle."</em>
