Disruptive selection -also called diversifying selection- is a type of natural selection where individuals with the smallest and largest values of the trait are favored while those with intermediate values are at a fitness disadvantage. This selelction goes against the average individual in a population.
Fats and lipids are hydrophobic which makes them water repelling compounds. Therefore, presence of a waxy coating on the outer skin of the desert plant prevents loss of water via evaporation from the skin of the plants. This helps the plant store water and increases its survival period.
