The victory of Union at Vicksburg is significant for the North because it helped the North to control the Mississippi River. The siege of Vicksburg occurred after the Battle of Gettysburg, also lost by the confederates (the South). Vicksburg is necessary for Union because it was a river port for the South, through which they were sending supplies in the West. By capturing Vicksburg, the North would isolate the Western rebel states like Taxes, Louisiana, and Arkansas from the South.
