A guiding principle of the Articles was to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states. The weak central government established by the Articles received only those powers which the former colonies had recognized as belonging to king and parliament.

Abolition is both cost effective and stimulating to the economy.

Most slave owners were primarily concerned about the so-called "wage bubble" that would burst and leave all slave owners destitute, when in reality slave owners who freed their slaves and still had some working for them as freemen flourished.
