Answer:

using special processes, the Egyptians removed all moisture from the body leaving only a dried form that would not easily decay. it was important in their religion to preserve the dead body in as life like a manner as possible.

Keep in mind, these where the first masks that our modern generation has been able to find and preserve, masks could have been made earlier than this but detirriorated over time.

However, the first modern surgical masks where made in the early 1960s and replaced a more primitive method of cloth masks.
