these are two equations in two unknown variables .. when we find these equations, we do some operations like sum of two equations so here, we will sum the two equation

-5x-y=8

then we have an equation for one unknown variable and it is y, we will divide the equation over the factor of y which is -4

\frac{-4y}{-4}=\frac{-8}{-4}

and we find that y = 2

we will not stop and we will go find the value of x by put y = 2 in any of the two equations because both of them will give us the same solution of x

I chose to put y = 2 in the first equation to be like -5X - 2 = 8

-5X = 8+2

-5X = 10 ( we will divide the equation over the factor of x (-5) )

X = -2
