The Qin adopted the legalism in warfare (against the other states). They crushed one state after the other. This phylosophy worked for them in war so they decided to continue with its principles in peace time. The Qin Dinasty reflected Legalist principles by enacting laws. It was a way to control the population of China and there were severe penalties for breaking the laws, including fines and conscription in the army.

The “Qin Dynasty” was the first empire of Imperial China that lasted for 15 years. It was named Qin dynasty after his founder Qin Shi Huang who was also the first emperor of the dynasty. The dynasty is well known for his Legalist reforms introduced by ShangYang that was credited for the strengthening of the dynasty. The rulers carried out numerous conquests, ending the authority of the Zhou Dynasty and later conquered the remaining six states of the Warring States.  

The Qins took advantage of their enemies’ weakness and were accused of being avaricious, preserve and insincerity. Legalist theory gave a strong governance to the dynasty with little internal opposition and talented men in the administration. Another advantage of the dynasty was its large and efficient military troops with capable military generals. They introduced modern transportation methods and weaponry which gave them mobility over other region of China.
