Pessimism might be ascribed to it because of the message it conveys. It predicts a day when our civilization has degraded to the point where numbers of people eat worms and the skill to weave wool is viewed as a sign of development. While on the other side, one may claim that it is optimistic, as the protagonist is looking ahead.
