When Mr. Frank stated that Anne puts him to shame, he meant that he was ashamed of the dark and evil thoughts he had of humanity during the holocaust, which were completely different from Anne's thoughts.

  • Mr. Frank claims that Anne puts him to shame when he reads the sentence in the diary that says "In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."
  • He feels ashamed that he, as an adult, didn't have such simple and hopeful thoughts during the holocaust.
  • That's because he only felt anger, fear, sadness, and dark feelings and thoughts, which only increased his suffering.

With that, we can contrast the personality of Anne and Mr. Frank in relation to the positivism and faith of each one. While Anne focused on thinking positive things that gave her hope, Mr. Frank thought about negative things that made the situation even worse.

If Anne had survived the war, she would have kept the same thought, as she has always been a person who seeks to see the best of things.
