Robert E Lee

Explanation:

Even though Robert Lee knew that slavery must be stopped, he didn't become it's partner as his reputation of being one of the finest officers in the United States Army, Abraham Lincoln offered Lee the command of the Federal forces in April 1861. But he declined and tendered his resignation from the army when they seceded on April 17 by arguing that he could not fight against his own people.
