Legal rights for women expanded in Europe and the United States during the 19th century since women became more likely to win custody of children after a divorce.

From 1861 – 1911 the number of successful divorces rose from 141 to 801 (respectively).

Child custody is a legal term which refers to guardianship which is used to describe the legal and practical relationship between a parent or guardian and a child in that person's care. Child custody consists of legal custody, which is the right to make decisions about the child, and physical custody, which is the right and duty to house, provide and care for the child.

what did the jewish, mexicans, chinese italian immigrants and have to do with the rise of political machines? Who, what why, etc
snow_lady [41]
To begin with, a political machine is an organization in which an organization gains support via promising rewards to those who keep them in power. It's designed to keep a particular group in power by promising favors. Typically, immigrants who first arrived here were impoverished, so political machines became so successful because they would promise to set immigrants up with homes or jobs or food so long as they had their vote.
So in short:

Who: Organizations whose main goals were getting and keeping power.

What: They essentially bribed immigrants for their votes.

Why: Political Machines did this to stay in power.

What BEST explains President Lincoln's purpose in using emergency powers to suspend the right of habeas corpus?
zmey [24]

Answer:

D He wished to silence any opposition to the Civil War in the North by imprisoning the opponents.

Explanation:

Given that Habeas corpus is related to the right of individuals against unlawful detention or imprisonment. Then it can be concluded that the best explanation of President Lincoln's purpose in using emergency powers to suspend the right of habeas corpus is that "He wished to silence any opposition to the Civil War in the North by imprisoning the opponents."

This is evident in the fact that at the time of the American civil war, Washington, D.C., was around slave territories thereby having more Confederates sympathizers. These Confederates sympathizers were in the habit of frustrating the plans the Union military actions and discouraging the enlistment into the Union army.

Hence, to curb this, Abraham Lincoln, used emergency powers to suspend the right of habeas corpus, which means, the military authorities could detain any opposition to the Civil War in the North by imprisoning the opponents without due or legal process.
