The mass of HgO needed for 100 g of hg is 108 g

Finding the theoretical yield of Hg.

Given that

 • Actual yield of Hg = 100 g
 • Percentage yield = 50%

Then Theoretical yield of Hg = Actual yield / percentage yield

Theoretical yield = 100 / 50%

Theoretical yield = 100 / 0.5

Theoretical yield of Hg = 200 g

Calculating the mass of HgO needed for the reaction.

Equation of the reaction: 2Hgo (s)→2hg (l)+O2 (g)

Molar mass of HgO = 201 + 16 = 217 g/mol

Molar mass of Hg = 201 g/mol

Recall that ,

Number of moles= mass/ Molar mass

Therefore,

Mass of HgO (according to balanced equation)

= 2 × 217 = 434 g

Mass of Hg from the balanced equation = 2 × 201 = 402 g

Now,Having known that

434 g of HgO produces 402 g of Hg

200 g of Hg will be produce by = (200 × 434) / 402 = 216 g of HgO.

We can conclude that if 200 g of Hg is prodced by 216 g of HgO.

100g wll be produced by (216 x100 ) / 2=108g

Thus,to produce 100 g of hg, 108g of HgO is needed.
