In the late 1800s and early 1900s, violent riots were started in several Chinatowns by anti Chinese whites. The riots were caused mainly because of the intense labor competition that was prevalent during that time. The anti Chinese whites formed a group and they tried to drive the Chinese out of the towns.

The Problem is, modern refers to a time in history between 1900- and 1970 , this distinction is totally evident in architecture,, google it and you'll see plenty of buildings from the 50's. modern art too... google it and you'll see plenty of paintings made in the 40's
