The Antonine Plague of 165 to 180 AD (Plague of Galen) was the first known pandemic impacting the Roman Empire. It is believed that it was contracted and spread by soldiers who were returning from campaigns in the Near East.

The plague may have claimed the life of a Roman emperor, Lucius Verus. Scholars believe that the plague is smallpox.
