D. -1.2(3x-40)

-1.2 x 3x= -3.6x

-1.2 x -40= 48 (two negatives cancel each other out, so it will be +48)

= -3.6 +48.

You can also automatically eliminate B. and C. because multiplying the  -4 within the perenthesis would not give you 48.
