Temperature-sensitive alleles are an example of conditional alleles; at the permissive temperature, the gene has normal function

, whereas at the restrictive temperature, the gene has mutant function. You are studying the E2F pathway and you obtain a temperature-sensitive CDK4 mutant. At the permissive temperature, CDK4 functions normally. At the restrictive temperature, CDK4 is non-functional. Would you expect cells to continue growing or stop dividing when at the restrictive temperature? Explain your answer.

When at the restrictive temperature, we can comfortably expect the cell to stop dividing, whilst continuing to grow

The E2F pathway in a cell is responsible for the transition from the G1 stage of the cell cycle to the S stage. The G1 stage is where a cell grows and expands before the duplication of its DNA.

The S stage stands for synthesis. This is the moment in the cellular cycle in which the DNA of the cell is copied in order to prepare for cellular division.

Therefore, if the transition from G1 to S is blocked by <em><u>temperature restrictions</u></em>, we can expect the cell to continue growing, but <u>not </u>divide.

Mutations can be transmitted to the next generation if they are present in what
kari74 [83]

Answer:

Mutations can occur in either cell type. If a gene is altered in a germ cell, the mutation is termed a germinal mutation. Because germ cells give rise to gametes, some gamete s will carry the mutation and it will be passed on to the next generation when the individual successfully mates

8. Two rabbits are bred together. One is heterozygous for agouti coat
dusya [7]

Answer:

- Parental cross = Cch  x chch

- F1 = 1/2 Cch (agouti coat); 1/2 chch (albino coat) >> 1:1 phenotypic ratio

Punnett  square:

          ch         ch

C       Cch       Cch

ch    chch      chch

Explanation:

A heterozygous individual is an individual who has two different gene variants (i.e., alleles) at a particular <em>locus</em>. In this case, individuals having the "agouti coat" trait are heterozygous carrying both 'C' and 'ch' alleles. On the other hand, a homo-zygous individual has the same allele at a given <em>locus</em> (here, the 'chch' genotype associated with the albino phenotype). Therefore, as observed in the Punnett Square above, when a heterozygous parent is crossed with a homo-zygous recessive parent for a single gene, alleles segregate in the gametes of both parents so an expected 1:1 phenotypic ratio will be observed.

When centric diatoms reproduce by simple cell division, the two new daughter cells are?
dimulka [17.4K]
...are of unequal size.

Diatoms can reproduce either by sexual or asexual reproduction.
The asexual is the ordinary process and during the process of mitosis one of two new cells is smaller, while the other one is the same size of the parent cell.
The smaller cell will later  become normal sized because of the flexibility of the  walls or by sexual reproduction.
