Henry Johnson ward off a German attack of a listening post when:

Answer  = ' Used his rifle as a club and also stabbed German soldiers with a knife'

Basically, he used his rifle as a club, until his stock of bullets ended. After fighting, and killing, some German soldiers with only one blade, the German soldiers left ran back into the night.
