Japan changed under the Meiji Restoration because d) It became more old-fashioned. The Meiji Restoration was all about restoring Japanese traditions while advancing the country through modernization. To be able to do these two things which may seem opposed, this was possible through traditional imperial rule with modern ethics and ideas.
Freeing slaves during the civil war led to it. As Sherman was marching to the sea, he freed numerous slaves who now became refugees and joined him in the march. He made the special order because they had to be somewhere since they didn't have any land or property.
They settled in river valleys because they wanted their crops and soil to be rich and eaiser to water their plants.
