The triangle shown is one big triangle cut into two more smaller triangles: one medium-sized and one smaller.
ALL THREE TRIANGLES ARE SIMILAR BY AA.
Set the two smaller triangles up so you can see the corresponding sides. x is the short leg in one triangle and it is the long leg in the smallest triangle. Set up a proportion.
When given two fractions for example 2/3 divided by 3/6 the division sign changes to a multiplication sign and the fraction on the right swaps the numerator and the denominator so 3/6 becomes 6/3
so it will then be 2/3 x 6/3 and you get your answer thats how you divide fractions
The '40 years' is not part of the question. It's just there to prove that '2% each year' has been the experience for the past 40 years, so it's a good number to use for the rate of growth, past or future.
So, at any number of years 'Q' after the beginning of "this period", the population was or will be
Pop = (220,000) (1.02)^Q power.
(This equation is familiar from all of the bank-interest problems the student has done in past math classes.)
In 10 years after the beginning of "this period",
Pop = (220,000) (1.02)¹⁰ = 243,800 (or any reasonably close number)
