Explanation:

The uppermost layer of the earth's crust which is very porous and biologically active is called soil.

It is composed of three-phase namely:

1. Solid phase or Soil matrix which is composed of minerals and organic materials.

2. Liquid phase or Soil solution which is composed of water and minerals in dissolved forms.

3. Gas phase or Soil atmosphere which is comprised of lesser amounts of carbon dioxide and oxygen and more amount of nitrogen.
