The first man to be declared Viceroy and Governor-General of India was <u>Warren Hastings. </u>

<h3>What was the Viceroy?</h3>
  • He was the most senior government official in British India.
  • He represented the interests of the British government and acted in British interest.

The first viceroy was Warren Hastings and he received his appointment in the year 1773. He wasn't in charge of all of British India at its height however, and was more in charge of the province of Bengal.
