The dialogue suggests that Cheever and Herrick will use Elizabeth as a pawn to attract a confession from Proctor. Elizabeth has no chance to prove she is innocent.

Who is Elizabeth?

 • She is the wife of John Proctor.
 • She was framed by Abigail, who accused her of witchcraft.
 • She was cheated on by her husband, who had a relationship with Abigail.

Abigail accused Elizabeth as a way to get her away from Proctor. However, Proctor revealed Abigail's plans to the entire city, damaging his and her family's reputation.

Cheever and Herrick knew that the only way to clear Abigail's family name and people's trust in the judgments being set was to have Proctor claim that he and his family were involved in witchcraft. the best way to do that was to keep Elizabeth locked up.
