This theme is centered around the the aspiration to flee  into an imaginary delusional world through the use portraying of the fire escape as how one escape from their own realities.

The story shows the measure of the relationship between these Tom and Amanda and both of whom were said to be incapable of starting a complete lives outside their family.

Their family seems to be the factor tying them down and for them to be able to escape, they need confidence.
