Child labor was a common practice throughout much of the Industrial Revolution. Estimates show that over 50<span>% of the workers in some British factories in the early 1800's were under the age of 14. In the United States, there were over </span>750,000 children<span> under the age of 15 working in 1870.</span>

Social tensions were similar to ethnic and religious. Immigrants wanted to go westwards and establish new states, and locals wanted to get land and become politicians in new states, which caused problems. For example, Mormons were religiously prosecuted constantly and had to go as far as Utah in the end. Political tensions were party related and slavery related. They grew out of ideas on whether new states should be slave states or not.
The <span>Three-Fifths Compromise</span> was a <span>compromise reached</span> between<span> delegates from </span>southern states<span> and those from </span>northern states<span> during the 1787 United States </span>Constitutional Convention<span>. The debate was over whether, and if so, how, </span>slaves<span> would be </span>counted<span> when determining a state's total population for legislative representation and taxing </span>purposes<span>. </span>The<span> issue was important, as this </span>population number<span> would then be used to determine the </span>number of seats<span> that the state would have in the </span>United States House of Representatives<span> for the next ten </span>years<span>.</span>
