To set free

Looking at the sentence, liberate has to mean the opposite of capturing because the villagers <em>thought </em>the warriors were going to do something, but instead, they were captured. That's why "set free" seems like the best choice here.

Liberty also sounds like liberate, and liberty means freedom, which also makes the choice I picked the best.
