Because they were promised lots of land and some were indentured slaves that just wanted a ride over, but one big contributor was the fact that they got to start over their lives. And owning land back then meant that you had more power too!

Our society is different in the terms that they do not take power away from the rich... so the streets have more poverty.

Their effort to demand equality in these area lead to the creation of the Civil Rights act in 1964. This law banned all people and organizations in united states to conduct discriminatory treatment based on colour of the skin , racial background religion, gender , or national origin.
