The decisions in Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education are among the most important in the history of the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of the United States authorized state-sponsored segregation in public schools by its decision in the Plessy V. Ferguson case. However, the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education and the Plessy v. Ferguson case were declared unconstitutional (in public education).

In Plessy, the Supreme Court ruled that the clause allowed racial segregation; in Brown, it ruled that the clause did not allow segregation
