People didn't have to live in cities, people lived in cities because that is where everything was, automobiles made it easier for people to live outside of sides but still have access to everything the city offered.
Auto mobiles made it easy to travel than on foot. People who live in the suburbs could mostly afford them. Them almost all could when Henry Ford made his system but that's not important to this.
When you're having a conversation you look at that person. When you go to look away that means that conversation is remotely over, most of the time anyways.
