A kind of malnutrition, which is illustrated as an array of pathological situations originating due to lack of dietary protein or energy intake in varying ratios is termed as protein-energy malnutrition. This comprises two kinds of conditions, that is, marasmus and kwashiorkor.
The protein-energy malnutrition is common in both children and adults globally and is responsible for about six million deaths in a year. However, the form of malnutrition influences children the most as they have less consumption of protein.
