It is a new year, 1944, and Miep and Mr. Kraler come to visit and bring them a
cake. Everyone in the annex is excited about the cake because they have little food. On top it says, “Peace in 1944.” They talk about a cake last year that said the same thing.
They argue about who should cut the
cake. Mr. Dussel thinks Mrs. Van Daan gives her husband a bigger piece of cake. Mr. Van Daan doesn’t plan to give Margot a piece of cake because it might make her cough. We see how greedy Mr. Van Daan is by his actions.
