Identify the preposition(s) in the following sentence. The new restaurant is located on the top floor of the new hotel. Question
navik [9.2K]

The prepositions in that sentence are: "on" and  "of"

Prepositions are short words that stand before nouns usually, but can also stand in front of gerund verbs, sometimes. A preposition goes in front of its object.

An example:

-"Mary took ages to open the front door."  In this case "to" is the preposition and "door" is the object or noun.

- "Jenny has lots of money". In this case "of" is the prepositions and "money" is the noun.

Another definition of prepositions is that they are short words that link nouns to other words in a sentence. Prepositions can also completely alter the meaning of a sentence or phrase. Lets check out some examples:

- "Carl can meet Sally at 4 o'clock"

- "Carl can meet Sally before 4 o'clock"

- "Carl can meet Sally after 4 o'clock"

These three examples allow us to see how different the meaning of the sentence can be just by changing one single word, the preposition!

Here is a list of some of the most frequently used prepositions:

  • at
  • by
  • for
  • in
  • on
  • off
  • to
  • with
  • from
  • upon
  • before
  • into
  • through

In total there are about 150 prepositions in the English language.

Learning English prepositions can sometimes be a little bit hard, but a good way to get practice is by reading a lot of books or articles in English, or looking them up in dictionaries.

Now we know how important using the right preposition in a sentence or phrase is, in order to say exactly what we mean
