We can identify subordinate clauses and verbal phrases in each of the sentences in the following manner:

 1. "that live in this part of the country" - Subordinate clause
 2. "when locusts rub their hind legs against their wings" - Subordinate clause
 3. "to listen to locusts on a hot summer night" - Verbal phrase
 4. "that they make" - Subordinate clause
 5. "but hornets are more threatening" - Subordinate clause
 6. "hearing the buzz of a horne" - Verbal phrase

Difference between subordinate clauses and verbal phrases

A subordinate or dependent clause cannot express a complete thought on its own. To make sense, it needs the main clause the complete its meaning. Subordinate clauses begin with subordinating or relative conjunctions. They also have a subject and a verb.

A verbal phrase does not have a subject. It has a verb, but the phrase itself functions as either an adjective or an adverb in the sentence. Let's compare the two below:

 • Subordinate clause: I left because I wanted to see him.
 • Verbal phrase: Wanting to see him, I left.

Read the first three stanzas of the poem "The Snow Man" by Wallace Stevens. Given the ambiguous language, what possible interpre
Gekata [30.6K]

Answer:

that one must not be affected by the winter but be a part of it and enjoy it.

Explanation:

"The Snow Man" poem is written by Wallace Stevens first published in 1921.

The title of the poem is ambiguous. The word "ambiguous" means to have more than one meaning of something. The word "snowman" does not appear in the poem but its meaning can be defined either as someone it talks about the snowman or a man-made of snow.

The opening line of the poem "one must have a mind of winter" can be interpreted as one that must not be affected or be prejudiced about the winter season. One must not judge the winter season as harsh. One can enjoy the wild wind of winters only if one has a mind of winter.

When Johnny (from the Outsiders) tells Ponyboy to "Stay Gold' what does he mean?
ASHA 777 [7]

Answer: When Johnny said that to him, he meant for him to stay innocent. He meant for Ponyboy not to go down a bad path like many of the other greasers did. It was a reference to the Robert Frost poem "Stay Gold". Ponyboy had recited the poem to Johnny when they were hiding out at the Windrixville church. In one line of the poem, it had said "Nothing gold can stay" meaning that all good things must come to an end. So he was telling him to stay gold or stay good. So if you think about it he was telling Ponyboy not to change.
