On July 30, 1965, the Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans was signed by President Johnson into law. The Medicare program was initiated with a purpose to provide insurance and hospital facilities to the Americans aged 65 years and above.

Further amendments were made in the program to provide medical facilities to the prople below 65 years suffereing from certain disabilities or kidney diseases requiring dialysis or transplant.

The main foscus of the program was to pay for the medical expenses of the aged population of America who do not have enough funds to pay off their medical bills.
