World War I, which is also referred to as the Great War, began in 1914 after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

The murder resulted into a war across Europe and it lasted until 1918.

At that time, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire who were known as the Central Powers fought against the West comprising of Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States referred to as the Allied Powers.

World War I led to unimaginable levels of carnage and destruction during to advancementsin military technology killing over 16 million people in civilians.
