Mr. Van Daan thinks that Anne acts in an immature way, much like a kid and that she is irresponsible and foolish.

The order that was given to the residents of the Secret Annex with respect to talking in whispers and wearing stockings on their feet etc only made them feel more constricted and created more tension.

At the beginning of scene 4, Mr. Van Daan is seen lighting a match in the kitchen - looking for food.
