“In the following pages I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense.”
andre [41]

The purpose of the words "simple," plain," and "common" in the passage is to appeal to as large an audience as possible, as stated in option D and seen below.

What is purpose?

When an author writes, he or she has a purpose, that is, an objective or goal to reach through his or her writing. For this question, we are to analyze the purpose in the sentence by Thomas Paine and the use of the words "simple," plain," and "common".

Paine's purpose is to appeal to as large an audience as possible. The words "simple," plain," and "common" indicate that his writing will be comprehensible to all, no matter how educated they are.

With the information above in mind, we can conclude that option D is the correct answer.

The complete question is the following:

Read the excerpt from Common Sense."In the following pages I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense." What is the purpose of the words "simple," plain," and "common"?

 • to persuade readers of his point of view
 • to encourage only serious readers to continue
 • to demonstrate his impressive intellect
 • to appeal to as large an audience as possible

I need help on this pls (The book is called where the Red Fern Grows)!
viktelen [127]

Answer:

I'm sorry, I haven't read the book myself but I can help you with numbers 1 and 3.

#1: C, Personification. The wind cannot really be angry, so it is personification.

#3: C; To describe Billy's anger. This sentence is comparing his anger to the water boiling in "Mama's teakettle".

Again, sorry I can't answer the other ones. :/

Which sentence fails to use correct parallel structure?
Evgen [1.6K]
D is the correct answer because “of course you need to run more” is not parallel with the rest of the sentence. It should just be “running”
