Proprietary colonies were governed by a lord proprietor. The authority and power exerted by the lord proprietor came from a royal charter.

Maryland was one of the proprietary colonies of the British Empire between 1632 and 1776. Maryland´s first lord proprietor was Cecil Calvert,second Baron Baltimore.
